EXPLORING SOCIO-ECOLOGICAL CHANGE ON THE GROUND

While Geography is my academic home, my heart lies “below and to the left”. From this perspective, I set to discover the world and embrace its diversity.

I am fascinated by change, the change that can be experienced on the ground through a landscape and its people.

I bring together different communities of thought and experience to create bridges of understanding.

I am convinced that a shared sense of purpose helps us to act and make our world a better and more just place for all.

ABOUT ME

My work is strongly influenced by life in-between countries, cultures, academic disciplines and at the interface between science and society.

As a Quaternary geomorphologist I first investigated past coastal dynamics in north Europe as a key to understanding the present and grasping the profound impacts of climate change on life and societies.

As a geographer I focus on rural regions to explore existing conflicts and potential synergies between the use and conservation of natural resources.

In Europe, I investigate local perceptions of, and preferences for, coastal adaptation in the face of rising sea levels and how to foster a better understanding of socio-ecological trade-offs of coastal adaptation at the levels of science, policy and society.

In tropical lowland regions of Latin America, I explore how local peasant communities incorporate global agricultural commodity chains and whether this offers real sustainable and equitable pathways over the long term.
